Antony Williams our tutor for June 13

Until 14th April, 8 Cork Street

"With three big London shows, on right now, critics are taking the opportunity to reassess the status of Freud, Hockney and Hirst. Yes, Conceptual art has been dominant, but the biggest names in figurative painting more than held their own. So who is coming up behind? Back in the '60s Messum's put British Impressionism on the map. I am glad to say that Messum's has continued to champion the best of contemporary figurative painting and sculpture and I am delighted that they are showing some of my work alongside younger artists I admire."

"Although swimming against the tide of successive 'isms', including latterly conceptualism, the pursuit of the real continues, I believe, to have artistic currency. The direct engagement with the subject will endure and even thrive, because it is an ongoing and developing dialogue with, and an interpretation of the nature of things seen, coupled with an exploration and expression of the Artist's personality."

Over this Easter period, Messum's is exhibiting selected works by seven contemporary artists to illustrate the quality of figurative art now. These are artists who have used their grounding in draftsmanship and studied technique to create vital and original works of art.
